The intention is to provide accommodation in the heart of the community for tourists and fellow countrymen who wish to experience the heritage, cultural and unique linguistic nature of Caernarfon.. There are a variety of accommodation options within the building that can be adapted for groups of visitors, offering a simple feel but personal style and service at a reasonable price.
The initial ideas for spaces on the ground floor of the building include: a kitchen for accommodation users, shop space, a multi-use space, Another Place social space.
Welshest Town in the World
Caernarfon is special because it is the town with the highest percentage of Welsh-speakers anywhere in the world. Faced with the situation where the language is fragile around Wales we believe that it is important to give people the opportunity to enjoy the Welsh language in its heartland, where Welsh is spoken on a daily basis, and in turn this will increase the pride of the people of Caernarfon in the language and the need to celebrate it and continue to pass it on to our children. The intention therefore is to provide accommodation for families, children, young people and visitors from elsewhere in Wales to experience the linguistic nature of the town. We are also aware of our European and international context, and so the project is a way to celebrate our cultural and linguistic heritage.
(During the Urdd Eisteddfod 2012 which was held in the Nantlle Valley, Efa Gruffudd Jones the Chief Executive of the Urdd said: 'After spending a weekend in Caernarfon, I feel that all pupils who receive a Welsh medium education should also spend time there, so they have the experience of seeing that the Welsh language is alive.')
The norm in our society is to see dependence on public funds and intoverted for-profit businesses. If we believe in creating an innovative and fair Wales, we believe that we have to turn this on its head and create a model that is independent of public funds and cooperative in the way we work. We use local products and labor in everything we do. The aim of all this is the development of Caernarfon town economically and culturally.
Business model: Cooperative, Community, Initiative
In the spirit of the above principles we intend to select a co-operative / community business model. We believe we need to offer the opportunity to as many people as possible to be part of the initiative and to feel ownership of the enterprise.
The building in question is on Palace Street Caernarfon. In the cooperative spirit of the project, we hope to be able to work closely with other businesses in the street.
