What will I do in Caernarfon?

Are you coming to Caernarfon soon and staying in Llety Arall? Let us give you some top tips about what to do while you’re in the best town in the world!

Guides who know their stuff
If you really want to get to know the town, it’s worth spending time in the company of guides who know their stuff and can bring the history of the town to life! Rhys Mwyn is a archeology specialist and cultural historian who leads groups around Caernarfon and beyond (rhysmwyn@hotmail.co.uk). Deian ap Rhisiart also leads educational tours about heritage for individuals and groups (http://www.tourguide-wales.cymru/en/).
Get on your bike!
Get on a bike and explore the great cycle lanes in the area. You can hire a bike from Beics Antur in Caernarfon (https://www.anturwaunfawr.org/en/beics-antur/antur-bikes/) and take a leisurely ride around Y Foryd (an area of natural beauty) or Lôn Eifion and Lôn Menai). Why not cycle to Llanberis and visit the Welsh Slate Museum to learn more about the rich heritage of the slate industry.
Take a cruise
Take a cruise on the Menai Straits to see the area from a different angle. The Queen of the Sea offers short and long cruises including a cruise under the two bridges connecting Anglesey to the mainland (https://menaicruises.co.uk/)
Shopping
Llety Arall is located on a vibrant street of independent shops and you will be warmly welcomed in shops such as Iard, Palas Print, Lotti and Wren and Siop Manon of course which is on the ground floor of the Llety Arall’s building! Or visit Cei Llechi which includes art shops, gifts and crafts produces on site.
Steam trains
Another way to travel is the steam train through Snowdonia to enjoy magnificent views without breaking a sweat. Trains leave Caernarfon regularly (https://www.festrail.co.uk/).
Adventur
If you’re feeling more adventurous, schedule a guided hike led by Stephen from Aim Hugher? Stephen can also help you develop your mountaineering skills (https://www.mountain-hill-courses.co.uk/).
Family activities
Looking for things for the whole family? Aim Higher also organizes bushcraft sessions for the family, or why not try the Beacon climbing wall? (https://www.beaconclimbing.com/). Greenwood Park is full of activities (https://www.greenwoodfamilypark.co.uk/) for families and Gypsywood Park (https://gypsywood.co.uk/) for young children are always popular and are sure to put smiles on everyone’s faces!
Water activities
Make the most of being near the water! Parc Menai (https://www.plasmenai.wales/?q=en) specializes in offering all kinds of activities on the water – windsurfing, kayaking, surfing, paddle boarding – and much more! Or why not head over to Pellennig on Dinlas Dinlle beach which offers surfing and paddleboarding sessions – more information here: https://www.camu.cymru/pellennig
Iechyd da!
Food! And drink! Nothing beats a pint and watching the sun set red from the Anglesey wall. There are plenty of great restaurants on the doorstep of Other Accommodation, such as Tabarn y Boychgen Du, Tân a Wso and Oliveydd (a traditional Greek meze restaurant). There are a number of cafes in the town center and some of our favorites for lunch are Bonta Deli, Caffi Maes and Yashka’s Tasty Food.
The Castle
..but certainly not least…the castle! Caerarfon Castle cannot be avoided, and recent major investment has greatly improved the facilities and the visitor experience, with a number of areas opening for the first time to visitors. A few famous events have of course taken place there, but more recently it has been a great venue for performances by iconic artists such as Geraint Jarman and Candelas Welsh rock bands. And that’s a final tip – remember to take a look at Y Galeri’s arts program before visiting which offers a diverse range of gigs, comedy, talks or watch the latest films in their cinema!
